Y10 Trades Carpentry

10TRA
Course Description

Overview

Trades Carpentry (10TRA) is for students who are wishing to develop knowledge and practical skills in carpentry, or who may be interested in a career within the building and construction industry. 10TRA provides the foundational knowledge to take Trades Carpentry in the senior school. This is a primarily practical course, with theory used to support the practical learning and deepen student's understanding.

10TRA is a half year course divided into two semesters (or approximately two terms).

Projects

Students will undertake two main projects. A range of skills and techniques will be covered from health and safety, measuring, selecting materials, hand tools, joining methods, finishing techniques etc...

Health and Safety and Behaviour Expectations

The school workshops are hazardous environments. The safety of our staff and students is a priority. As such a high standard of student behaviour is always expected. Students are required to follow all teacher instructions and all health and safety procedures. Students are not permitted to use any equipment or machinery without training and the permission of the classroom teacher.

Take Home Project Expenses

Students will be supplied a set amount of materials for their projects and the cost for these will be added to the student’s account by the Bursar.

*Once projects are assessed students must pay for and take projects home within two weeks. The teacher will advise students when projects are ready to take home.

Assessment

There are two major CAM assessments in this course: Health and Safety; Completed Project.

Pathways

In the senior school Trades Carpentry is taught and assessed using the Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (BCATS) Level unit standards.

The skills learnt in this course can be used in a range of industries, particularly the building and construction sectors, but also provide valuable life skills.

Y10 Computer Science

10CSD
Course Description

Overview

Computer Science and Design is aimed at developing students’ knowledge and ability to design and develop 3D models and animations, and their programming and program development skills. Y10CSD is intended to teach the foundational skills required to take CSD in the senior school.

Y10 CSD is a half year course divided into two semesters (or approximately two terms).

Tasks

  • Create a computer program that can take in and manipulate data to produce specific output – assessed.

  • Design and develop a 3D Model of their choice and animate it – assessed.

Health and Safety and Behaviour Expectations

The Computer Labs are specialist environments. The safety of our staff and students is a priority. As such a high standard of student behaviour is always expected. Students are required to follow all teacher instructions and all health and safety procedures. Students are not permitted to misuse any equipment or machinery and must adhere to the Cyber Safety / User Agreement that was signed on enrolment at the college.

Assessment

There are two major CAM assessments in this course. The student will generate a range of assessment evidence through screen shots, model design, development, evaluation and teacher observations. The students will assemble this evidence into a digital portfolio, where appropriate, and submit this by the due dates for assessment via Microsoft Teams.

Home Learning

There is an expectation that students will work on some of the theory and design parts of their assignments in their own time for homework. If students are away from school, it is their responsibility to catch up on work missed. All milestones and deadlines will be shared with students via a class on the Microsoft Teams platform. If students do not have access to a device at home, they must see the teacher as access to computers can be arranged for use at break times, and before and after school.

Prerequisites for advancing to NCEA Level 1

There is an expectation that students will have a certain skill and knowledge level to cope with the transition into the next level of study. The step up to Level 1 is considerable. The prerequisites for admission into Level 1 Technology is:

Demonstrating high standards of behaviour at all times and following all health and safety rules, procedures and teacher instructions

Gaining at least an ‘Achieved’ grade for all assessments

At the discretion of the HOF through negotiation with the student, subject teacher and the Dean

Pathways

Knowledge and skills gained in this course can be applied to a range of industries, tertiary studies or simply used as valuable life skills.

English

English courses are designed for a number of purposes.

ENG courses are academic and provide the credits needed for students to follow their pathway to Tertiary courses, many of which require English credits at certain levels.

The ENV courses are designed for students who work at a slower speed and while they are designed around the same Achievement Standards students often complete fewer standards in the year.

- ESOL standards are available for students who have English as a second language and who find English language more difficult.

The L1ENP course is designed to get students to pass functional literacy and focus on Supported Unit Standards that teach life skills. This course is specifically aimed at students who struggle with literacy so they can gain their Level 1 NCEA.

English as a subject is compulsory through Year 12 and we endeavour to place students in courses that will meet their needs and abilities.

Pathways English focuses on Generic and Core Unit Standards that are work related.

Gateway & STAR

GATEWAY/ CORRESPONDENCE – Year 12 & 13

What is Gateway?
Gateway is designed to strengthen the pathway for students from school to workplace learning.
It involves work experience for a set period each week – can be up to two days with the remainder spent in normal classes, may also be an after school placement.
It gives students a chance to show an employer that he/she can be a good worker, honest and reliable. Students who have been in Gateway are often offered jobs/apprenticeships during the year. Very few students do not get a permanent job, apprenticeship or go on to further their education from this programme.

What sort of placements?
The most common placements are in Agriculture, Early Childhood, Building, Mechanical Engineering and Retail, Hospitality, Trucking Firms, Electricians, Tourism, Youthwork, Hairdressing. However we are willing to look into any possible career pathway.

The students will be given the opportunity to select the fields they wish to experience. The work placements are usually found in Central Hawke's Bay.
What is the selection criteria to enrol in Gateway?

Can anybody join Gateway?

Not exactly – Due to limited places we must undergo a selection process. Final approval into the programme is made by your Dean and the Gateway Co-ordinators. Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 credits in their chosen course. Honesty and reliability are essential.

*Are you ready for Life after School?*
Maybe the Gateway programme is an option for you!!!!
Who do I see for more information?

Must have achieved NCEA Level 1

The Gateway Programme at Central Hawkes Bay College is an opportunity for students in their last year at school to combine Academic study with industry training and experience.  Students benefit from enhanced skills, and knowledge of the workplace that lead into apprenticeships, employment or further training opportunities.

The Gateway Programme takes up one of the students five/six timetable subject lines.  Students will be in Gateway class during this line, as they are for any other subject.    Classroom time allows for the completion of core unit standards that will prepare students for a work placement, and then specific industry unit standards that relate to their Gateway placement career area of choice.  They will also have one day a week in a work placement during term two and three.

The College works in partnership with local industry and businesses to provide work placements for Gateway students one day per week.  An individual learning plan is created in conjunction with the employer, school and student, with a clear understanding about the knowledge and industry skills to be attained and unit standards to be assessed.

Students need to complete an online application for the Gateway Programme https://forms.office.com/r/pDP0CfDze2.  Once completed, a selection process will follow which includes an interview with both students and their parents/caregivers.

An introduction meeting will be held Term 3 of each Year for 11/12 students interested in Gateway/Star or Trades Academys for the following years programme. Available options and the application process will be outlined at this meeting.  All standards achieved on the Gateway Programme are recorded on the student’s NZQA Record of learning and count towards NCEA at the appropriate level.

Students applying for the Gateway Programme should have a clear idea of what career path they wish to pursue or investigate, have good attendance and intend to use the Gateway Programme as a means of entering directly into the workplace at the end or the year, seek an apprenticeship or continue onto pre-trade and/or tertiary study.

This means the Gateway Programme becomes key focus of their timetable while maintaining four conventional subjects.  This all works to create a clear pathway towards the students chosen career option(s).

Students who do not meet the initial criteria will be given the opportunity to reapply for the programme once they demonstrate they meet the set criteria outlined above, or they may look at alternative programmes such as FUTURE PATHWAYS, EIT or PITO Trade Academy or STAR depending on their area of interest.

L3 Gateway (GATE)

L3GATE
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs S. Andersen.

The Gateway Programme at Central Hawkes Bay College is an opportunity for students in their last year at school to combine Academic study with industry training and experience.  Students benefit from enhanced skills, and knowledge of the workplace that lead into apprenticeships, employment or further training opportunities.

The Gateway Programme takes up one of the students five timetable subject lines.

Interest in the world as it is today, as it was in the past and how it may become in the future based on a wider understanding of the impact of human interaction throughout history. A willingness to think and communicate that thinking. A sound standard in Junior Social Studies and an interest in learning about the world.

Theme for the year: Protest

During the year we look at two main topics:

  • Protests in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a particular focus on the Springbok Tour
  • Oppression of African Americans

For the Protests in Aotearoa New Zealand we study key protests that have occurred in New Zealand, such as Bastion Point and the 1975 Land March, and the key people involved in these, such as Dame Whina Cooper. We then complete an in-depth study of the Springbok Tour, looking at the different perspectives around the tour.

Within the African Americans topic we look at slavery and the abolition movement; the rise of Black Civil Rights in the first half of the 1900s; and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s in America.

An exciting course which provides insight into how things were, how things are and how things may be in the future. If you like learning something new each lesson, enjoy researching and discussion then this is the course for you. History makes sense!

Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

At least 12 credits in an English-rich subject, but Level 2 History an advantage

Do you want a course that will provide you with the skills to not believe everything you read? Want to develop your analytical skills? Want to learn how to create a strong argument? Does your chosen profession/university course require you to be able to write a report or think about the reasons people make decisions? Then History is for you!

Universities ask for an English-rich subject to have been taken for many of their courses, such as Law, Engineering, Health professions etc. as being able to write well, and understand people, is a key skill in many professions. For example, Health Sciences and Nursing at the University of Auckland asks for 18 credits in an English-rich subject due to the importance of being able to research and write well, as well as understand how people behave and think. History will provide you with this!

Themes for the year:

- The causes and consequences of the Atomic Bombs

- 1066 and all that

The first part of this course looks at the causes and consequences of the dropping of the atomic bombs in 1945. This includes looking at the battles in the Pacific during World War II, and decisions made by key leaders at the Potsdam Conference, as well as consequences such as the testing of nuclear weapons and the Cold War. Students will complete an internal that looks at perspectives from historians on whether the atomic bombs needed to be dropped.

• Student driven choice of topic: you will have the opportunity to delve further into an historical area of your own interest. This may build on what we have studied in class or it may be something of your own choosing. This will allow you the opportunity to choose what you study but to also apply the historical skills you have been developing throughout the year.

For the second part of the course students look at the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, examining why it happened, as well as looking at the long-term consequences the event had on today's society, such as the language we speak today. First year Law degrees cover the laws of William the Conqueror, so if you are looking to do Law this will especially help you!

Want to do a well respected course that will help you boost your literacy skills, improve your evaluation skills and help you understand decisions that have been made in the past that still impact us today? Then do History!

Universities ask for an English-rich subject to have been taken for many of their courses, such as Engineering, Health professions etc. as being able to write well is a key skill in many professions. History will provide you with this!

Students will gain a deeper level of insight into influences that have shaped society, not only in the past but  NOW, in the present and indeed will be able to predict the future!

Conflict and Tragedy

We start by looking at the causes, consequences and main events of the Vietnam War, including the protest movements in America, and the music that came out of that era. We also look at the significance of the war to New Zealand and what impact it has had here since, including looking at two local soldiers who were killed in the war.

The second half of the year looks at the causes and consequences of the rise of the Nazi Party, specifically Hitler being made Chancellor in 1933. We look at the Holocaust as one of the main consequences of this event.

For your first and second internal you will research an event that involves conflict/tragedy/conspiracy. This can be an event of your choice.

French (Y10)

10FRE
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Shepherd.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students who enjoyed learning during the Year Nine module will be welcomed on this course. An interest in learning a foreign language and a willingness to try and speak in french is the main prerequisite but a Merit or Excellence grade in Year 9 French will indicate a greater degree of potential success. This is not, however, essential, and ALL students who are interested in learning French, and want to have some fun whilst developing some amazing skills ,will be welcome on this course.

We will continue to learn through singing too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkff4xjkWjE

      La tour Eiffel.

   La Belle France

Students will recap the key learning areas from the Year Nine module and add depth and detail to their understanding.

New topics will include food choices and ordering at a Cafe or Restaurant, Travel, Leisure, Weather, Telling the time, Likes and Dislikes and even do some cooking as we explore French cuisine at our own "cafe" We will learn how to use the past and future tense, how to use negatives and how to make ourselves understood in the various French speaking countries around the world as we explore French congnates, culture and cuisine!

The skills developed will incorporate Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. There will be a CAM grade awarded for each of these areas.

There may be an opportunity for some students to aim for NCEA credits at Level One depending on the level of progress made by the individual students and their desire to pursue this opportunity.

Course Overview

Term 1
We will discuss the best ways to be successful in this subject including guidance about organisation of notes and vocabulary. We will recap the areas of learning from the Year Nine module and work through new topics adding to our vocabulary and understanding. We will introduce new verbs through reading, listening and translating. The first CAM will be based on listening and will focus on comprehension in all areas, but especially through aural learning.

Term 2
This Term we will focus on developing our written language. This will include the use of new phrases and some reference to the past and future tenses as we introduce new verbs and vocabulary through songs, reading, speaking and games. The CAM will be a written task to assess our increased ability to write in French. We may try to incorporate a french style cafe as part pf the oral CAM. This course is likely to be a half year course but does have the option to become a full year course if students wish to do this.

Term 3
Some students who wish to continue with French for the whole year can do so.This term we will continue to add to our vocabulary whilst focusing on wider reading to deveop greater undertsanding. We will look at how we can make sense of French by using prior knowledge and the links between English and French words.
For students following the half year course please see the above details for Term One.

Term 4
For those students who may be completing a full year course, we will focus on speaking French, and may complete an internal assessment for NCEA Level One which involves interaction or a prepared talk.
For others who are doing the half year course, please see details form Term Two.

Learning Areas:

Students will study aspects of all Science topics (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science). The course is totally internally assessed and assessments will range from independent practical investigations to researching tasks and writing reports. It is an ideal for a student that wishes to have some Science credits at Level 3 but might not want to specialise in the individual Science courses (14 credits towards UE entrance can be achieved in this course). However, this course can also be taken by students who are also taking L3 Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Students would benefit from having they own device (laptop) at school to use during class. If you take this course and gateway you must be prepared to complete work in your own time so you stay up-to-date with assessments. This may include in handing in work early if out on work placements when assessments are due.
