L1 Industrial Design Engineering (L1IED)
Course Description

Overview
Industrial Design Engineering (IED) is aimed at developing students’ knowledge and ability to design and manufacture prototypes and products using Engineering techniques.
Projects
Students will undertake several minor projects and one major design project. A range of skills and techniques will be covered from researching, computer aided design, exploration of materials to the safe use of tools, equipment and machinery.
Take Home Project Expenses
Students will be supplied a set amount of materials for their main design and skills project and the cost for these will be added to the student’s account by the Bursar.
*Once projects are assessed students must pay for and take projects home within two weeks. The teacher will advise students when projects are ready to take home.
Health and Safety and Behaviour Expectations
The school workshops are hazardous environments. The safety of our staff and students is a priority. As such a high standard of student behaviour is always expected. Students are required to follow all teacher instructions and all health and safety procedures. Students are not permitted to use any equipment or machinery without training and the permission of the classroom teacher.
Assessment
All projects and work are assessed. Students will generate a range of assessment evidence through sketching, CAD drawing, journaling, practical work, theory work and teacher observations. The students will then assemble this evidence into a digital portfolio and submit this by the due dates for assessment via Microsoft Teams.
Students can achieve subject endorsement in this course.
Home Learning
There is an expectation that students will work on some of the theory and design parts of their assignments in their own time for homework. If students are away from school, it is their responsibility to catch up on work missed. All milestones and deadlines will be shared with students via a class Microsoft Teams site. If students do not have access to a device at home, they must see the teacher as access to computers can be arranged for use at break times, and before and after school.
Prerequisites for advancing to Level Two
There is an expectation that students will have a certain skill and knowledge level in order to cope with the transition into the next level of study. The step up to Level 2 is considerable. With this in mind, the prerequisites for admission into Level Two Industrial Design Engineering is:
15 credits at Level 1 Technology (Industrial Design Engineering)
At the discretion of the HOF through negotiation with the student, subject teacher and the Dean
Pathways
Knowledge and skills gained in this course can be applied to a range of industries, tertiary studies or simply used as valuable life skills.
Recommended Prior Learning
In order to cope with the demands of this course and to have the best possible chance of success it is highly recommended that students have completed and passed Year 10 Industrial Design Engineering.
Pathway
Industrial Design Engineering is tailored for students along the full spectrum from fabrication, sheet metal work, Mechanical Engineering to University and Tertiary study in Design, Industrial Design and so forth.
Additional transferable skills include CAD to CAM manufacturing, Divergent thinking and problem solving.
