Course Description

Gateway is an exciting opportunity that opens a new pathway from school to employment/on job training or tertiary study by combining school study with work based learning. Students attend a work placement one day a week and complete an individual learning plan of approximately 20 industry based credits relating to their chosen area of work. Examples of industry placements include: trades, hospitality, health, education, childcare, retail and agriculture. 

Gateway gives students a chance to show an employer that he/she can be a good worker, honest and reliable. Students who have been in Gateway are often offered jobs/apprenticeships during the year. Very few students do not get a permanent job, apprenticeship or go on to further their education from this programme.

Central Hawke’s Bay College is funded for 46 Gateway places per year, therefore we must undergo a selection process.

To be eligible to participate in the Gateway programme students must meet the following criteria

  • be 16 years of age
  • be reliable and punctual with a good attendance record
  • have good classroom, homework management skills
  • able to manage individualised/self-directed learning and assessment
  • acknowledge that they will miss one day of school and commit to catching up work missed in class
  • capable of undertaking a structured work placement, and achieving credits in the workplace
  • able to display a strong interest in a particular industry or career direction
  • be work ready
  • have energy and enthusiasm – a desire to learn and work

Students who do not meet the initial criteria will be given the opportunity to reapply for the programme once they demonstrate they meet the set criteria outlined above, or they may look at alternative programmes such as STAR.

Gateway is not just work experience. The student should have an identified career already. Gateway is work based training designed to simulate the real world of work. Students will not work shadow out in business but be as actively involved as possible within the constraints of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and work on industry based credits towards a national qualification.

Students may be referred by teachers who have noted particular talents, work ethics and goals of students.
