Geography is the study of the environment as the home of people. It seeks to interpret the world and how it changes over time - past, present and future.
It explores the relationships and connections between people, both natural and cultural environments.
Geography investigates the ways in which features are arranged on the earths surface. It describes and explains the patterns and processes that create them.
Students who take geography learn to think spatially, use maps, visual images and new technologies including Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to obtain, present and analyse information.

This course aims to develop an understanding of the natural and cultural environment through the study of a variety of topics including:
Tsunamis
Population Studies
Sustainable use of an environment





Course Overview

Term 1
Introduction to Geography
- Understanding of skills and concepts relevant to geography
- Learning how to conduct geographic research in the field, this includes a local field trip collecting data and writing this up

Term 2
Introduction to Extreme Natural Events
- Understanding how Tsunami's affect an environment

Term 3
Introduction to Population Studies
- Understanding what population is
- Understanding the global population and the issues we may face in the future such as sustaining a population for the future

Term 4
Revision
- students will be revising for their upcoming exam

Recommended Prior Learning

Students wanting to take geography need to have the ability to try, participate and challenge themselves.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Throughout the year Geography students have the opportunity to take field trips. Level 1 students conduct geographic research, collecting data on a one day trip and explore the natural and cultural environment at Mount Maunganui for three days.

Students complete work in workbooks and need pens, pencils and coloured pencils
