L2,3 Outdoor Education / Environment

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Welch

Outdoor Education - Environment

This is a practical course with an environmental / community slant & will have a variety of L,2&3 assessments available.  During the year & each week there will be practical activities that we do during class time.

Students must be willing to participate in & give their best to all activities!  Practical & theory.

It is proposed that there will be a week long optional trip to the Queen Charlotte Sounds! You do not have to go on the trip to get credits! So the trip is not an official part of the course as it is an optional extra.  Students will be given fundraising opportunities if they would like to raise funds for the optional trip. Possible activities on trip, diving, snorkelling, mountain biking, tramp, kayak, camping, cooking, rock climbing, rafting, sledging... Leadership opportunities!  The students going on the trip will have a say in what they do.

Students would be eligible to go on the trip &/or do the practical activities each week if they are making progress with assessment.  It is expected that students get at least 14 credits at their level.

Approx Cost?  Approx $500. (for optional trip)  The other activities will have little to no cost.

Please note that this course can be taken in conjunction with L3PEX.

Course Overview

Term 1
Investigating an environmental project locally. Possible practical activities may include but are not limited to the environmental project, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle board, optimist yachting, tubing... etc...
Assessment & associated theory would also begin alongside the above (4 lessons per week, 2 practical, 2 theory).

Term 2
A continuation of the above but with the flexibility of doing what it takes to complete theory & practical.

Term 3
As above. It is likely that the trip will be offered for the later part of term 3? It is expected that all students will have completed or be approaching at least 14 credits by late term 3.

Term 4
Tidy up time! Complete assessment enjoy last practical activities.
